The Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) is a UK tax deduction scheme where contractors deduct money from a subcontractor's payments for their tax and National Insurance contributions. These deductions count as advance payments towards the subcontractor's tax and National Insurance. The scheme applies to all construction work carried out in the UK, including site preparation, decorating, and refurbishment.
You must register as a contractor if you pay subcontractors for construction work and your business is either a construction business or spends an average of more than £1 million a year on construction in any 3-year period. Subcontractors should register to receive a higher rate of pay, as unregistered subcontractors face higher deduction rates (30% instead of 20% for registered subcontractors).
As a subcontractor, you can reclaim CIS deductions through your Self Assessment tax return if you're self-employed, or through your company's Corporation Tax return if you operate through a limited company.
